Take-off description

this takeoff has a short "runway", and is recommended only to pilots with a lot of alpine experience.

Getting there

The shortest access to this takeoff is through the hiking trail starting in San Bernardino. Beware that the hiking trail is not suitable to everyone as it is really exposed on steep terrain.

Weather

Being over the altitude of the main pass, this takeoff is easily influenced by valley winds. PLEASE BEWARE THAT THIS VALLEY IS ORIENTED TO NORTH (the water flows to north, the valley wind to the south) This actually means that even if the wind condition is south, in summer and generally on thermal days, the start could be totally lee side and therefore you cannot start. This happens becaus the breeze is coming from NORTH as the valley is directly connected to the NORTHERN side of the alps!

Rules / airspace

No special rules. Please beware of the various wildlife protection zones.

Comments

During Summer this is a good late afternoon start. It is placed @ 2200m, therefore it is very easy to thermal up and fly south.
