Take-off description
Site is owned by the CHGPA. Well maintained gravel covered slope. Rocks below launch, elevated HG ramps on either side. Site is NOT flown in a North cross due to rotor. Site easily gets too windy and blown out. PG pilots do not fly if surface wind is over 7mph because it's typically over 15mph at launch.
Getting there
Take I-270 north to I-70 west to I-81 north. Take Rt 16 west 5.2 miles to Upton; go right on Lamar Road for 7.5 miles. Turn right on Rt 75 and go 2 miles to Rt 30. Turn left on Rt. 30 and go to top of mountain; turn left immediatly before the Mountain Restaurant and follow gravel road to first driveway on right.
Weather
Excessive turbulence when crossed.
Rules / airspace
Camping is allowed. When flying XC, note prohibited airspace around Camp David (P-40). Check NOTAMS. Hagerstown and Martinsburg are also have Class D airspace. Do not fly near radio towers south of launch - microwave danger.
Comments
Good site for first coss-county flight: lots of LZs over the back. But beware of airspace at Hagerstown and Martinsburg and check P-40 NOTAMS before flying XC.
