Take-off description
a hang-glider type launch pad on the summit of mt. Kanemi. a little tight but doable. combination of small elevation difference and the fair distance to the landing make it, well again, a little tight but doable.
Getting there
20-30 minutes drive south from the miyakonojo interchange on the miyazaki expressway
Weather
the topography of long and low ridges stretching in the direction of the landing make the site very sensitive to changes in wind direction. strong winds come up quite suddenly, and if they are at an angle to the ridges, expect a rough ride. On the other hand, due to the unusual (for south Kyushu) north-westerly orientation of the site, it is occasionally the only flyable area on a given day in all of Kyushu. https://www.windfinder.com/forecast/kanemi_dake
Rules / airspace
do not fly over the chicken farm between the launch and the landing (though it's a great thermal source!). for other details, talk to local flyers.
Comments
though a little challenging to fly, if one does manage to thermal up, a tour of the mountain range behind this small mountain is very rewarding. Do not go there without knowing how to open the fence(s) blocking the launch(es) - or have someone with you who knows ;-)
